ASHRAE Standard 241, Control of Infectious Aerosols, establishes minimum performance requirements to mitigate the risk of airborne disease transmission in new buildings, existing facilities, and major renovation projects. The standard specifies criteria for the design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of mechanical air systems to ensure effective control of infectious aerosols.
A key provision of the standard is the specification of equivalent clean airflow (ECA), defined as the volume of pathogen-free air flowing to occupied zones that provides an equivalent reduction in infectious aerosol concentration when compared to the combined effects of outdoor air ventilation, in-space air filtration, and supplemental air disinfection technologies such as germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) systems.
The framework of Standard 241 permits the integration of multiple control strategies, enabling system designers to select combinations of technologies that align with economic feasibility, operational constraints, and sustainability objectives while maintaining compliance. Additionally, the standard requires that all spaces with significant human occupancy incorporate engineered air-cleaning measures specifically intended to reduce concentrations of viable airborne microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses.
