LoRa and LoRaWAN

Confluence AI sensors utilize three data communication protocols: WiFi, BlueTooth Low Energy (BLE) and Long-Range data links (LoRaWAN). Each is state-of-the-art for digital communication.

Virtually every home and building in the USA has WIFI connectivity to the Internet, and BLE for smartphone connections to other devices. LoRa and LoRaWAN are much less familiar to the average person. The distinction between LoRa and LoRaWAN are that LoRaWAN is a network based on an open protocol developed by the chip manufacturer SemTech. Just as WIFI is used to connect to the Internet, LoRa is the communication technology that connects devices to the LoRaWAN.

LoRaWAN and IoT

LoRa is the ideal platform for IoT devices for many reasons. In a typical city, it can transmit up to 3 miles, and in rural areas up to 10 miles.

This also means that within buildings, fewer gateway devices or signal boosters are required. Its ultra-low power consumption will allow batteries to last up to 10 years! Healthcare and many other commercial, government and institutional building managers restrict access to their WIFI networks for security reasons. LoRa eliminates network security risks.
